Listen to what those other guys said: they are right on. But if you are only going to use it around the house on rare occasions for light work, a cheap, small, crappy Black and Decker will suffice. That is what they are designed for: rare usage and only light jobs. That is why they are inexpensive, but they do fill a niche for the average homeowner. The guys on my crew use either DeWalt , Milwaukee, Makita, Bosch, or other quality construction brands. I have both Milwaukee and DeWalt. I am a building contractor. This being said I would go with a dewalt 18 1/2" drill. I personally have three and while they are not quite as good as milwaukee they also cost a good bit less. They have 3 speeds. The batteries charge in about an hour. and they are built to last. With cordless drills the more you spend the better. If you have a little extra money to spend try getting a dewalt or makita lithium ion these are much lighter a little smaller and charge in 15 minutes. These drills above all have hammer drill options( can drill concrete). Yes rpm matters You need slower rpm to turn bigger drill bits so not to burn up the drill And higher rpm for small drill bits and driving screws. Also you want a drill that has a trigger that has adjustable speed control. Not just hit the trigger and drill is full bore speed(hard to start screws that way). Also to save money I recommend using amazon .com you will find these drills at prices less than lowes and home depo. Also don't be afraid to get a refurbished drill I have 2 and can't tell them from the new one. Plus they have the same warranty as a new one for less money. good luck. I work construction.
