@oramato My cedar was so abused by the sun, it readily took two coats. In fact, within 5 minutes, the first coat was flat as can be and had soaked in. I then applied the light second coat and have no issues. A follow up video will be taped on June 30th. That's 60 days after it was applied.

I spoke with SS and they are indeed the manufacturer and have looked at your video. Their person recommended following the can instruction of one coat on horizontal cedar, and testing the penetration to see if a second coat penetrates within the 20 minutes, BUT if the cedar is not penetrated rapidly then do not apply a second coat.

Tim, I am almost certain I know which "Nono" you are using (goes on white). I just received a shipment of the "crystal clear" MY can reads: HORIZONTAL SURFACES: On horizontal cedar, mahogany, and other dense woods, apply only one coat of finish. .. . I think you applied two coats, so you have overcaoted by a factor of 1/3 of 13 trillion particles per inch. Am I right?

With all the snow we got in MD this season, there have been all kinds of accidents with these suckers -- as well as with other forms of snow removal that people come up with (i.e. the guy that used a propane torch to melt snow on his roof and burned the house down. Sheesh.) Great video! Thanks a lot; I learned a bunch! I get it--You ALWAYS treat the snowblower as if it were on-- just as you ALWAYS treat a gun as if it were loaded.... And cool suspenders. :)

Thanks for your comment. This is a video for people who don't know the *differences* between the different machines. It's also intended to educate folks that machines that look identical are not so. This video must be intended for people who have never seen a snowblower before. If snow is part of your life then a snowblower is part of your life. Snowblowers are not very dangerous when the engine is not running by the way.

They are great machines. I can't say enough good things about them. Up until two years ago, I had never used one. A shovel to a snowblower is like comparing a rock to a Paslode Impulse nailer! If you have a small area, just get a small dual-stage blower. You'll never? regret it.

@AsktheBuilder That is what contracts are for! And the only time I have been burned is when I did not have one. Once! :) I think every company has to operate inside their comfort zone and their experience. I like for all expenses to go through us. I keep pretty accurate history on costs for future projects. It is easier to get a better reading on SF costs when all costs are included in your budget.

@ArtisanTony Tony, no you don't! You add that profit and overhead onto your bid. You simply communicate that you'll have to service the item and you're missing out on the profit. Most understand that. The point is that you're taking a huge risk if you buy NON-RETURNABLE material with your money. If you want to buy it, then simply get that exact amount up front before you place the order. Obviously you've never been burned here. Wait till that day happens to you. You'll remember this post.

@AsktheBuilder You are missing out on profit when you let an owner purchase equipment or material for you to install. Our contract specifically states that we purchase all material and equipment for the project. If an owner wants to purchase these items we will usually turn down the job, This is the first indicator the owner is not interested in the fact that you have overhead costs to cover and apparently does not want you to make a living from your occupation.

If a project you work on requires material that's special order, why should you put your money up with the possibility of the customer backing out of the deal? Never use your money to get these items. At the very least, have the customer buy it and you show up to install it once delivered.

About ten days ago I was on it just before a snow came. It was 4 inches of black ice - the strongest - at my shoreline. That's plenty strong for a man. Bob houses are out everywhere. We got tons of rain two days ago that turned the snow to water. It's refrozen, so I'm going to drill it today. I estimate with the overnight temps well below 32 F, that I'll get at least 6 inches.

this would be a great thing to have here in South Florida with the Hurricanes we sometimes get. I currently have a 8000w "portable" thats I plug into a transfer switch when I need it. the key being I need to go out plug it in and then start it up. at least it has an electric start. At age 17, I purchased my first car - it was *new*. I bought my first house at age 23. My mom and dad were poor as church mice. I'm a generator technician, and the place I work for is a guardian dealer. Guardian does have a line of diesel units. One of the bonus's of them is that they usually have a 4 pole alternator, and only turn 1800rpm vs the 2 pole 3600rpm that most gas units have (small gas models just don't have enough low end torque to run at 1800).

I have looked into these vs. a solar panel and or wind turbine with a battery backup bank, like others up here in Michigan we have not had the power go out for more than 8 hours, not sure if batteries would do the job and certainly would not run all the things you mentioned. I guess it depends on a persons budget, a good battery bank with inverter might cost as much as one of these...Do any run on anything else than propane or diesel? Like natural gas? Propane is outrageous here..Thanks!

Thank you sir! I'm about to grout some tile, and wanted to get a refresher since it's been 10 yrs since my last tile project. Checked out a tiling tutorial by someone else before I found yours, and he made many of the common mistakes you mentioned. I 100% agree with susanthescribe, fantastic series. My hubby was starving waiting for me to bring lunch to the work site; took me most of an hour to find all of the parts to the series. I'd reconsider renaming them or adding part 1-4 to them. Just grouted my floor tiles following your methods, and I have to say they look great. I have never tiled before and these videos are a life saver. One suggestion for first time tilers, use a tile wet saw. The tile cutters will not do the trick when it comes to making small width cuts.

@DKPAIN Thanks for the comment. You don't say why. I would agree with you if the grout is very wet and you push hard on the sponge. You'd then dig out the grout. But when the grout is stiff and you're in the final stages of film removal, it doesn't matter. I went to your channel and there are no tile videos there. Just a video about cars racing on ice. How about you investing your time making some videos about what you know about tile and grouting? Surely the ice has melted off the lakes by now.

Wow, thanks. This was a huge help! I just finished grouting my first floor. I really didn't have a clue how to do it, but it came out beautiful thanks to your videos. On a side note, instead of ceramic tiles, I used vinyl tiles that be set with grout. They honestly look like ceramics, but aren't as cold as ceramic tiles. The room I put them in sits on a concrete slab so thats important. They were very easy to cut, probably much more so than a ceramic. Got them at Menard's. Thanks again!!

There is a risk to a small degree. I would mix no more than a gallon at a time. Use COLD water to slow down the hardening of the grout in the bucket. That will extend the work time for you. Your BEST strategy, since you're a grasshopper, is to go spend $50 on some scrap tile and glue this to a piece of underlayment that you lay down on your garage floor. Grout it for practice to see how much you can handle at a time.

I will be grouting my floor for the first time and am wondering if I should only mix small batches if the grout at a time? I have a whole kitchen to grout and am wondering if mixing the grout in small batches might give some color inconsistancy? The thinset must be dried, and preferably, cured. The tiles are very tender and susceptible to movement without dried grout locking them in place. When grouting you must be very careful about twisting your knees. The tiles can handle compressive pressure from above, but twisting motion can rip them lose from the thinset.

I'm just talking from what I've seen in many North American gardens. I just prefer to get some sun in my garden, the easier maintenance is just a bonus. I have some big, beautiful 100-year old Scots pines. I've kept most of them, but the spruces, which are incredibly dense, had to go this winter. They don't look very good trimmed either.

You can cut the carpet yourself and install the tile, but the carpet will lose it's tension. The right way to do it, in my opinion, is to have a carpet installer come out to give you a quote. Confirm that the best way is to pull back the carpet now from the wall folding it back on itself. Do NOT cut it. Then install the tile. Let the tile cure for a week. The installer will then come out and cut the carpet carefully to fit the tile re-stretching it at the same time.

Veronica, um maybe..... There's a ton you have to know to do wall tile. The key is the walls need to be smooth and sound and the first horizontal row must be level. I rarely start the first row off the floor. I start with the second row setting them on a straight piece of wood screwed to the wall.

Thanks for the great info here! I am a novice DIYer working with tile (Travertine) laminate. Mine came in 51" x 13 sections. I am getting a lot of waste becasue when I get to the end of a row, I am having no use for the rest of that section. Unlike real tile, laminate can only go in one direction because of the tongue and grooves. Also, any side that is cut, is useless because it will not connect (no tongue or groove) to anything. Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks again!

if your using an unmodified thinset yes hydration does make the thinset stronger. Modified thinset hydration reaction is not applicable. Ideally you should mop the concrete floor and let it dry. I would be worried that the thinset will dry before the water you put on the floor does. Try an experiment... wipe your trowel with water and then try to get thinset out of the bucket. How good does it stick to the trowel when its wet as opposed to dry?

its true concrete does not cure by drying, in fact its better to keep it moist during cure to prevent cracking. the co2 lost during the manufacture goes back in only when the co2 from air if disolved in water.

Great tip on damping the concrete before the thinset. This same rule applies putting the 2nd or 3rd coat of drywall mud over freshly sanded joint compound. The fine dust will prevent the new layer from sticking well and could chip off.

Hi Tim. Thanks for the great, informative videos! I'm a fellow Ohioan! I have a couple questions; I am laying ceramic floor tile in a kitchen on top of cement backer board (HardiBacker). Should I wet it with a sponge the way you did here on the concrete? My backer boards are all layed down in thinset, and screwed into the plywood subfloor. There is 1 piece that is a little higher than the adjacent board, less than 1/8". Should this be problematic, or with the mortar for the tiles level it out?

Actually my house also ended up having thick metal mesh (covered with plaster) in all corners and I had to re-do all of them. I tried a hammer and chisel (instead of the knife) and a reciprocating saw (blade cut at same lenght as wall thickness). None of them worked. Hopefully someone will have an answer for this situation. Thanks for your great videos!! They have been very helpful.

Been there done that, learned from my mistake :) Another tip is take a skill saw and set it to 1/4 to 1/2 in. and score the drywall every few feet between the studs, it rips out a lot faster and less of your energy.

Hi Tim, This is a very important and useful video. Here in the Southern California mountains, we have a lake nearby that freezes over during the winter. Every year, at least 10 people drown playing on the ice. Usually, one person falls through, then many others drown trying to save them. Should be Ok, It's caused by having a buildup of gum from leaving gas set in the tank over summer. You could try using a carb cleaner, but it's really difficult to get them cleaned properly unless you get it overhauled. I ran for three years using 1/2 choke - bought a new carb last summer when I learned that Tecumseh stopped making engines.

I don't know if I agree with you at all. The JD one has the starter, but it weighs a ton. The Sears Craftsman one is LIGHT and throws the snow as far. The trouble comparing the two videos is the snow in THIS video was much wetter, so it doesn't leave the chute with the velocity as you saw in my JD video. You'll NOT be disappointed with a Sears one, In fact, I just took possession of a second Sears one I was so happy with this one. I want to have a backup.

It's the third largest lake in New Hampshire. I believe it has about 7.2 square miles of surface area. The lake is nearly 13 miles long and it was about 5/8 of a mile out to that island where the #1 green was. The day of the tournament, the ice was 18-inches thick. That's pretty amazing.

You simply can't get a usefull amount of gas out of it. Sure you can get some gas out but never more energy than you put in. How often do you *create feedstock* for your digester? It's like trying to harness the power of your lungs with a small windmill. It's just not practical. Biogas works on farms because there is plenty of biomass there. You would need a community sized program to make some usefull gas from a digester but it wouldn't make enough gas for everyone to use individually.

There is a way to tell if you have a special pipe that measures solids. Call a pumping company and ask if they will check for you if you uncover the lid. DON'T stick your head in the tank to look. Just expose the tank lid. Go read my column at my website about septic additives.

There is several reasons for filling in those cracks. One of the best reasons is the amount of pressure created by freezing water. The water will expand about ten percent when it freezes and it does that at over a 100 tons per square inch. That much pressure will push a driveway around.

I've inherited an old 20ton craftsman splitter, but there's no manual, so I've been playing it by ear when I use it. The operation's pretty easy - it's mostly the care and maintenance that I'm concerned about. Any suggestions? And why did it squirt 1/2 gallon of hydraulic fluid out the release valve when I first used it? (I wasn't the one who filled it, so I have no idea how much was in the reservior). BTW - when it comes to gnarly oak y-joints - 20ton splitters rock!

Would`nt it be more practical, to have an adjustable knife, placed in the other end? This machine should be strong enough to cut to cut the logs in four pieces....

sorry your very wrong by saying they are worthless, if you have real wood that needs splitting, like bases of trees that are over a foot an a half wide they are worth there weight in gold

You missed the point. Some people *can't* use a maul for all sorts of reasons. Perhaps they have a torn rotator cuff. However, they can push the lever. You have to open your mind as to the fact that not everyone has your skills or abilities.

I'm just curious... Not to be a dick or anything, but if you're physically fit enough to go saw rounds and stack them like that, why can't you split them with the maul? Don't get me wrong, they're convenient, but a little pricey if you ask me. Well, that's my peice, good video! Cheers!

Well you have good reason to be concerned (that's a lot of pressure), but if this product wasn't safe, you would have heard about it by now. I honestly think your chances of getting hurt are extremely low when you're following the safety rules and guidelines in the owner's manual.

Hydraulic failure means a little oil flow. Because it doesn't compress very much, the oil flow should be minimal, and the oil isn't very hot. It's not as if the cylinder is going to explode. Failure usually occurs at hose ends.

I have a 30 ton Northstar and it works great, I split a cord a week. T bird can split that by hand and then see who has it easier.

Why do you say that? It's just a time-tested hydraulic ram that you would find on hundreds of thousands of pieces of heavy equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers, aerial ladders, utility-company bucket trucks, etc. What's more, car mechanics work under this technology everyday!
