Only a MORON is going to buy this car which gets worse mileage to pet their egos. The stupidity of this car is that it took millions if not billion of research funds which could have better used to research on finding more sources of petro or on improving the efficiency of fuel. Only a certifiable loon and simpleton, like Obama, believes that this is a viable option. A question to highlight the stupidity...It only goes 40 miles on battery, and takes over 12 hours to charge?

@Flamesofame Hydrogen is already obsolete. The first fuel cell vehicle, the FCX clarity, will cost $50,000, and go 300 miles to a full tank. The fuel cell lasts around 6 years before it needs replacing, and it will be available in 2015. The Tesla Model S costs the same, goes exactly as far, but the battery lasts ten years instead of 6 and will be available next year.

12 gallons with 300 miles sounds like a prius joke. gas generator, otherwise called a hybrid system. are people really buying this shit. my prius gets 55 mpg regularly, this is dumb. for sure not anything different than a plug in prius, great job chevy. way to get bailed out and not provide alternative fuel cars.

@bosszeroboss FYI battery is covered for more miles (warrantee wise) than any engine in vehicle sold in the states (100k miles) Purchase price, gas vehicle is much cheaper. Leased vehicle, the prices are alot more comperable. However there are other benefits to consider besides cost. A person also needs to determine which is the best vehicle for your driving habits. this is a commuter vehicle, not a road trip minivan.

@bosszeroboss You are leaving out about 5k in maintenance costs for oil/transmission fluid/timing belt changes. Also, factor in the convenience of not having to go to a gas station. NTM, this is first gen - cheaper and more efficient cars will follow once production line is established. 40k is not bad for entry level EV's. My guess is these will sell good and in time be as affordable as the civic.

The Civic gets an average of 29 miles to the gallon. That?s 248,581.47 miles on the price difference. Assuming you drive an average 12k miles a year, & you only drive the Volt on the 40 mile range of its battery, using no gas, you?d have to own the Volt for 20.7 years to justify the price difference in gas.

The target was 40 miles because that is all most people need when you have a generator on board. 40 miles is actually generous if you look at scientific studies that show a 7 mile battery is actually best in terms of ROI.

After that the gas generator kicks in and powers the electric motor at an efficiency of around 50 MPG, so even if you never charged it, it would be performing at the level of the best hybrids out there. This is a great step in the right direction and offers a single car that can operate emissions-free most of the time, and at high fuel efficiency for longer trips. Way to go Chevy!

there is one thing that i find to be a little skeptical in regards to the volt and its hype. It talks about only being able to cover 40 miles on electricity alone; this is less than what the first electric cars like the EV1 and S10 EV. they could cover 60 miles give or take. the thing is that they have batteries that can cope with the higher mile distances, but they aren't installed. i'm not trying to put down chevrolet's work-in-progress but at the same time they need to step it up

I'm very impressed with this car but i can't find the stats on it anywhere. it seems like they could tell us what the gas mileage would be if you never plugged it in. and what's the 0-60 or top speed? I'd also like to know what kind of electric bill increase your looking at if you always plug it in and never dive it to the point where your using the gas generator.

@storsy You don't know what you are talking about. The EV1 was an all electric model and it was back in the 1990's. At that time Lithium-Ion Technology wasn't available for the battery. The Nickle Metal Hydride Battery wouldn't give you 100K miles like the battery for the volt. They didn't produce 3000 cars only a few hundred and they couldn't put the EV1 into production because it wouldn't pass Dept of Transportation Crash Tests.

@LemUUU, I think these electrics and hybrids are expensive to produce. Americans don't tend to like this kind of care either. I own a 2009 Prius and is feels like a cheap car because of weight reduction (I guess). It is a good car, though. Another problem with all electric, is that you can't use it as a traveling car. Many people don't have the money to own a limited use vehicle like this.

i used everready and got a pack of green compound wrapped in plastic , there were 6 rolls stacked up together i thing each roll carried 1.5 volts i then cut the rolls seperate and wired 2 rolls with + N - cable to my tv controller and it worked, i stabbed the wires into the sides of the compound with some needles.

I understand chevy claims that on a full charge and full tank, the car can travel 300 or 340 miles non stop. If the Volt comes with a 10 gallon gas tank, then it would get only 30 or 34 mpg non-stop. I have yet to hear a rep say how large the gasoline tank will be, but if it is like I describe above, that would explain why chevy reps are always so low key about this car. A one gallon gas tank and traveling 340 miles, non-stop, is much more exciting. The size of the gas tank will make or break.

Why isn't the electric cord for the VOLT built in and retractable. That is the one fault I find with the Chevy Volt. The owner has to take the electric cord out of the trunk plug in both ends, then un-plug both ends and wind up the cord and put it in the trunk. You know the cord is going to be all over the trunk. Too much work. I hope GM goes with a retractable cord, to make the Chevy Volt almost perfect. You know the Japanese will do it.

Saw REM when they were starting out and they had zero stage presence. Every body was into the music though. I've seen Son Volt twice in the last 18 months and, even today, Jay seems to have little desire to talk to the audience. Doesn't bother me or anyone else as far as I can tell. When you're making music this genuine, what's left to say?. Wish more bands saw it the same way.

It's all subjective... I most certainly consider Band of Horses alt-country. I also agree on The Jayhawks... I remember when "take me with you when you go" came on the radio in 1992, but haven't really liked the jayhawks since that album (Hollywood Town Hall). I would definitely consider both of the Earle's alt-country (Justin & Steve). Whiskeytown is a classic and launched the great career of Ryan Adams. I'd maybe add Rhett Millers solo stuff, and Slobberbone. I'd consider Dwight alt somewhat.

When I think of it, I think of the roots-rock stuff from Uncle Tupelo and its offshoots, The Jayhawks, Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams, Old 97s to the retro stuff of Robbie Fulks, Wayne Hancock, BR5-49, etc... With tons of stuff in between. In a way you could even consider Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakam, etc... alt.country. But that's just me....

Right, it's what I refer to as "alt-country", ie. Band of Horses, Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo, Deer Tick, Bill Callahan, etc etc. Son Volt just has a really good American sound, a sound that was developed in more rural areas and now has reached a mainstream.

This vehicle sucks. It's a downgraded EV1 14 years after the fact. This is not an electric vehicle, it's a hybrid. It goes 40 miles then uses gas. The EV1 went 90 miles so unless electric motors have gotten worse in the last 14 years this is a downgrade. GM could do so much better than this..... the fact it still uses gas is proof they are still a sell out to big oil. Why does the Volt need to be 40 grand? At that price, they won't sell, IMO. If it was 25 grand, it would blow the Prius out of the water in sales, which is what GM really needs to do, and now. The Prius starts at 23K, and that's got to be the price range for any viable alternative.

Let's see, the car isn't as efficient in hot or cold weather. That knocks out a bunch of customers, you charge it in your garage, well that knocks out all condo and apartment people, it's 40k, that knocks out a lot of people, especially all the ones who recently bought new cars in the cash for clunkers. ya but the us does not have the info structure for a all electric car. I live in MI what if i want to go to florda. I will be stuck somewhere in the middle of Ohio with a all electric car. The volt is perfect for anyone that travels less then 40 miles per day and for anyone who wants to go on a long distence trip. For the volt once the battery runs out you can use gas. Nobody knows what the actual msrp will be it is a rumor that it will be 40,000 and I honestly wouldn't be suprised to see it close to that. 8 hours isnt that bad for a 40 mile distance,if you have a 240 outlet which just about every garage in the U.S. has it will charge in under three hours. And another rumor I have heard is the gasoline engine will get about 49 mpgs so that with the 40 mile battery power is a huge competitor to the prius and the volt also has more power than the prius

You are producing some great videos, I'm usually the one tearing things apart. One of us watching your videos is going to invent something big which will help our country become self dependent. Keep up the good work. I may have a check for you someday. The problem with the solar or electricity producing companies is they invent the technology to produce electricty for $1/watt but then they keep it for themselves or big companies and don't sell it to residential customers, I want to change that .

AC motors do not work as a generator. An AC induction motor can but you only get about 25% back out after modifications (1800 rpm+). Also any AC from an Alternator, or Axial Flux Alternator. The AC current from Smaller wind turbines is basically useless UNLESS you run it to a "Bridge Rectifier" which converts the random AC voltage to random DC voltage which can be stored or used by an inverter. If you try to hook AC from an Alternator, you will destroy what every AC appliance you hook it to.

Putting power back onto the grid should require proper electrical switches to shut power when the grid itself is down. In a Prius, for example, there are two drivetrains, one for the electric motor, the other for the ICE. The Volt, on the other hand, only has one, connected to the electric motor, and the ICE is only mechanically connected to a generator, which recharges the batteries. So, when the batteries run down, the ICE comes on only to recharge the batteries.

For what it is it's not too shabby. I did a little number crunching and if GM's claims are true this car is well worth the $40K price tag. This car is supposed to get about 230mpg and have a range of around 340 miles on a full tank with 40 mile available by battery power alone. If that is the case than this car has a 1.3 gallon fuel tank. The folks at GM however are being really tight lipped on the actuall tank size which leads me to believe that this may not be the case.

This allows them to save quite a bit of money and helps in being a world wide company. The Chevy Volt will be the Opel Ampera. Same car with different body. The Chevy Cruze is another worldwide car. They days of having a car company operate in one country are over. You MUST operate worldwide and take advantage of markets.

The designers at Buick have finally gotten close to where the Germans have been in the aesthetic department for years now. The problem though, is their marketing department hasn't kept up. Buick needs a rebirth similar to what Cadillac did (car that has great suspension, goes around the Nürburgring like a champ, etc). Mostly they just need to change the fucking "Regal" name. Why would they advertise 300 mile range on an electric that only has 40 miles range (which isn't "extended" by any measure)? You contradict yourself in your own post. If the ICE "isn't mechanically connected to the drivetrain", what would it have anything to do with longer trips, which the Volt CANNOT take on the electric alone?

@USAon3 Actually, no, it isn't a hybrid, in the traditional sense. The gasoline engine serves only to generate electricity, and as such isn't mechanically connected to the drive train. They call it a range-extended electric vehicle because that's what it is. If you pulled out the gas engine, you'd still be able to drive it by charging it the way you would a regular EV. It may not have the same electric range as most EVs, but it more than makes up for it by having the gas engine for longer trips.
