Why Do They Call Them Cordless Drills?

Why are they called cordless drills?
I have never seen a CORDED drill.
So why bother adding cordless?

  1. Well young person. Back in the olden days, power tools were plugged into an outlet, just like a hair blower.
There are certain instances when they still are the better choice, you don’t run out of power at a critical point

  2. I guess you haven’t been around long enough to see achorded drill. I actually have one but won’t use it anymore. Black and Decker were the biggies back then.

  3. my dad has a cord drill…..cordless drills hav batteries……and i dont think they sell cord drills anymore….their old

  4. some drills have cords some don’t

  5. My ex husband has a corded drill he is 75 yo does that tell you any thing ? lol

  6. I know nothing about tools—but, I know this. Cordless means battery operated—- Corded means electric.

  7. Drills with cords is just that, they receive power from outside resources.
Drills without cords receive power within themselves, such as a battery.

Your question has TWO possible interpretations and all the answers previous to mine have chosen to respond to the first and most obvious – that you have actually never seen a drill that has a cord (hard to believe, but I guess it COULD happen) – and they have all done a great job of addressing that possibility already, so I won’t even bother to touch on it.
The second possibility is that you have, indeed seen drills with cords, but never seen one of them that used the word “CORDED” as an advertising point.
If that is the case, then the TRUE spirit of your question would be more like, “If drills without cords are advertised as “CORDLESS”, then why aren’t drills with cords advertised as “CORDED”?
The answer to THAT interpretation of your question would be that cordlessness is considered a desirable feature and therefore used as an advertising point – while having a cord is considered a disadvantage and therefore NOT stressed in the advertising and/or labeling of the product.

  9. There are two kinds of power drills”
    1) corded, drills are electric drills that must be plugged into a wall outlet to be operated
2 Cordless drills are drills that do not need an electrical cord, since they are battery operated. The Battery is usually part of the handle, and is removable for charging.
If you have ever seen a drill that had to be plugged into the wall outlet to operate, then you have seen a corded drill. Corded drills are the original drills and they are still in use today. Many contractors, builders and trades people prefer them to battery operated, since for the most part they have more torque, and you never have to worry about a battery running down, as long as you have electricity available, your corded drill will work. If the battery runs down on a cordless drill, you have to re charge it or have another recharged battery available.

  10. There are corded drills. They just haven’t been made recently because batteries are so much more effective and user friendly. My dad had tons of them in his shop.
